The hardness of metal wire can be changed by a heat treating process called annealing. The annealing of wire is achieved by the drawing of wire through a drawplate, which is a device used to determine the size of wire. The more times wire is drawn through a drawplate the harder it becomes. "Soft" wire is left undrawn. "Half-hard" wire is drawn twice. "Hard" wire is drawn four times.
